Tragedy Strikes at OAU as Lion Kills Veteran Zookeeper

In a shocking turn of events, a 9-year-old male lion at the Obafemi Awolowo University’s Zoological Garden claimed the life of a staff member during routine feeding. The incident, which occurred on Monday, has sent ripples of sorrow across the university community.

The victim, Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, a dedicated Veterinary Technologist, had been overseeing the zoological garden for over a decade. Described by colleagues as experienced and passionate, Mr. Olawuyi’s untimely demise has raised questions about safety protocols in handling wild animals.

According to eyewitness accounts, the tragedy unfolded while Mr. Olawuyi was inside the lion’s den, performing his daily duties. Despite immediate efforts by other staff members to intervene, the severity of the attack left no chance for survival.

University spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the incident in a statement, expressing deep regret and extending condolences to the bereaved family. The university has dispatched a delegation to support the widow and children of Mr. Olawuyi during this difficult time.

In response to the incident, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the attack. The university community is in mourning, reflecting on the life and service of Mr. Olawuyi, who had nurtured the lion since its arrival at the garden nine years ago.

The incident has sparked a broader discussion on the safety measures in place at zoological gardens and the risks faced by those who care for these majestic but potentially dangerous creatures.
